Environmental Integrity is a Minority Business Enterprise, or MBE, that has certifications from several organizations.  It is a GNEMSDC certified MBE, a SOMWBA certified MBE, a DBE, and an R2/RIOS Member.

DBEs, or Disadvantaged Business Enterprises, are for-profit small businesses in which socially and economically disadvantaged individuals run management and daily business operations, in addition to owning at least a 51% of the business.  Racial minorities and women are generally considered socially and economically disadvantaged, though others can qualify on a case-by-case basis.  Like a DBE, an MBE (Minority Business Enterprise) is a minority run business, but qualification is strictly on the basis of ethnic or racial minority.

Being recognized as a DBE and/or an MBE means gaining community and fiscal support for being a minority run company.

GNEMSDC is the Greater New England Minority Supplier Development Council.  It is a 35 year old non-profit and an affiliate of the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC). They foster business relationships between certified MBEs and corporate members.  They recruit major corporations, municipal, and state agencies that have potential for awarding contracts to MBE businesses, making it easier for MBEs to get connections and contracts.  Additionally, they help MBEs work with one another, providing a network for increased business.

SOMWBA is the State Office of Minority and Women Business Assistance and part of the SDO.  This certification is a marketing tool that adds a competitive edge to bidding for contracts. More than $240 million of the budget of Massachusetts is targeted to certified minority and women businesses, helping them get contracts with the government.

Being certified doesn’t guarantee a government contract or that other MBEs will work with you, but it does greatly enhance Environmental Integrity’s ability to get large contracts and lets people know that working with us is not only good for the environment but also for a business run by minorities.

R2/RIOS is a recycling certification.  R2 stands for Responsible Recycling Practices and they were developed for electronic recycling by the states, the EPA, recyclers, and NGOs over the course of several years.  R2 is the industry standard to recognize safe, responsible, and high quality recyclers.  Being certified R2 means that the Environmental Integrity not only recycles properly, but also protects worker and environmental health and safety, finds reusable parts, and implements proper data destruction.  RIOS is the Recycling Industry Operating Standard which provides a guide for an integrated management system that helps continual improvement in operational, quality, environmental and health and safety.
